Avian & Exotic Pet Services, Modesto Veterinarians

Experienced Care for Your Feathered Friend

Pet birds are as diverse as their adoring owners, each with their own unique abilities, character and appearance. Birds are beautiful, bright, and entertaining pets, but can be demanding requiring competent and consistent care.

Food, feathers, and waste often scatter beyond the confines of their cages, and some can be quite noisy. More social birds will require daily handling and attention to be happy.

Our Modesto veterinary team provides comprehensive care for our avian patients. Pet parents are supported by our team as well, with valuable information, guidance, and pet care resources.

We can advise you in selecting an appropriate bird for your lifestyle, housing your pet, accessories, training, nutrition, and much more.

Veterinary Care For Birds

In birds, symptoms of illness are rarely obvious until their condition has become very serious. We encourage you to bring your bird for veterinary care regularly. Your veterinarian can catch small issues before they turn into bigger medical conditions.

Routine Checkups for Birds

While birds do not usually require vaccines, they are susceptible to parasites as well as bacterial and viral infections. A variety of diseases and conditions may be present in your adopted bird, and the stress of moving to a new home could have an impact on their health. With a physical examination and diagnostic testing, we can detect potential health problems early and begin treatments right away to help restore your bird's good health.

Optimal Diet for Your Pet Bird

Nutrition is critical for our feathered friends. At Veterinary Medical Associates, we can provide you with the essential guidance you need to feed your bird the ideal diet for good health and vitality.

Surgery For Birds

From time to time, avian pets require surgical procedures to help maintain or restore good health. We offer a variety of surgical services, including broken wing and leg repairs, to keep your bird healthy.

At-Home Bird Care Basics

To get your new pet's life off to a great start, we recommend creating your aviary in advance of adopting your pet bird.

All avian pets require the following essentials:

  • Appropriate enclosure and accessories
  • Full-time access to clean, fresh water
  • Proper nutrition and treats
  • Sanitary environment
  • Regular veterinary exams

Set up the cage with food and water just before bringing the bird home. Be sure the cage is big enough for your new bird to stretch out their wings and exercise freely.

Offer perches and areas for your pet to rest or walk around. Good quality cages are designed for easy removal of dishes and convenient cleaning.

Position the cage in an area free from hazards and well away from any drafts, fumes, or odors. Place the cage at eye level so your feathered friend feels secure and has a bird's eye view of day-to-day activities.

Many birds live a long time, some up to eighty years. Adopting this type of pet requires advanced planning should your bird outlive you or you are unable to care for it in the future.

Emergency Care for Birds

We offer urgent and emergency care for sick or injured birds. Call us during our regular hours if you suspect your bird needs veterinary care right away.
