Dental Cleaning FAQs
-
Why should I book a dental cleaning for my pet?
About 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop some type of oral disease by age 3. Oral hygiene is an essential part of a long, healthy life for your furry friend.
By preventing oral disease and detecting dental issues early, we can prevent unnecessary pain, tooth loss, and other long-term oral and overall health problems for your pet.
-
How do I book my pet's appointment for a dental cleaning?
To book your pet's appointment for a dental cleaning any time between October 1 and November 30, please call us. We will schedule you into the next available slot.
-
Do I need to be an existing client at Veterinary Medical Associates to take advantage of the discount?
No, you do not need to be an existing client. All are welcome to book a dental cleaning.
-
Do you accept walk-ins?
Due to the requirements for a pre-anesthetic assessment, the time it takes to perform a dental cleaning and the popularity of our discount, we will not accept walk-in dental appointments.
Please call us to schedule your pet's dental cleaning.
-
Will my pet need to be under anesthesia for the dental cleaning?
Yes. Anesthesia is administered to all patients undergoing dental procedures to allow our vets to thoroughly clean the teeth without putting undue stress on your cat or dog.
Your veterinarian will conduct a thorough pre-anesthetic assessment for your pet before the dental cleaning. We will conduct a physical exam and do bloodwork to ensure your pet can safely undergo the procedure.
We will also check the health of your pet's teeth, discuss recommendations and provide an estimate.
-
What will happen during the dental cleaning?
Once your pet is under anesthesia, we will conduct a complete examination and charting of your pet's teeth. The vet will clean, scale and polish the teeth, including under the gum line. Depending on the stage of the teeth, we may take X-rays.
If the vet discovers any oral health concerns, we can schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss treatment options.
-
Will my pet require any followup care after the cleaning?
Your veterinarian may recommend a follow-up examination be scheduled two weeks after your cat or dog's initial dental cleaning.
During this checkup, we can discuss any concerns and provide advice on how to care for your pet's teeth at home.
-
Can I book a routine exam after my pet's dental cleaning?
Yes. You can book your cat or dog's next routine wellness exam at Veterinary Medical Associates when you bring your four-legged friend in for a dental cleaning.
